Elle est située à l'emplacement d'une porte de Paris de l'ancienne enceinte de Charles V . Les murs adjacents ont depuis été détruits.

Porte Saint-Denis was the gate where the kings of France would pass through on their return to Paris from religious services at the Saint-Denis basilica. The last sovereign to pass through the triumphal arch was Queen Victoria on her visit to the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris.

This ornamental arch was the first of four to be built in Paris and is located roughly around where the original toll-gate of Porte Saint-Denis through the Wall of Charles V (the city walls at the time surrounding Paris) was situated. The arch was built in the early 1670's and has sculptures, friezes and bas-reliefs on each facade.
